Author Cynthia Reid Wills Comes Home to Carver
Author and movie producer Cynthia Reid Wills spoke to 100 girls at Carver Friday about her struggle as one of the first black student to integrate Spartanburg County Schools. Wills is a former Carver student who wrote the book “Content of Character” based on her childhood diary during the time of integration. Her book is now a movie, which will be released locally June 30.

Carver Elite Organization Inducts 35
Thirty-five young men were inducted into the CEOs Club Tuesday night. CEOs is a men’s mentoring program sponsored by the national organization, My Brother’s Keeper, which was started by former President Obama. Boys are paired with adult males and participate in activities to build confidence and camaraderie. They have a pledge of brotherhood to each other. They sit together at meals and are given jackets as part of the group.

Carver students and families are invited to the South Carolina Upstate College Fair at Majority Baptist Church. The event, which will feature our nation’s historically black colleges and universities, will be held Saturday, Feb. 10 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the church at 400 Hudson Barksdale Blvd. Students and parents can meet college recruiters form around the nation and learn about admissions, financial aid and scholarships.

7th grader named Carver spelling bee champ
7th grader Kameryn Geter-Whiteside emerged as Carver’s Spelling Bee champion Jan. 10. The runner up is 8th grader, Katheryn Hernandez Gomez, who was last year’s winner. On Jan. 9, Geter-Whiteside and Hernandez Gomez engaged in an intense debate, with a back and forth volley that lasted so long it had to be continued into the next day. The final match was held Jan. 10, with Geter-Whiteside emerging as the winner. She will represent Carver in the district spelling bee.

Author Jessica Khoury visits Carver
Greenville novelist Jessica Khoury visited Carver Sept. 26 to share about the writing process. Students did character charades and made a quick mad lib story as a writing prompt.
Khoury’s visit was hosted through Seven Reads, a District 7 initiative to motivate students to be excited about reading and interact with real authors.

Wofford students spill secrets to college success
Students in Carver Middle School’s AVID elective met March 9 with a group of African American male students from Wofford College. Carver students had a chance to ask these young men anything they wanted about college life, from choosing a major, to how to spend your free time. Students were very excited about college life and demonstrated an impressive list of schools they hoped to attend– from Stanford, to Yale, to Julliard. Maybe a few are now convinced to put Wofford on their list as well.

Tedejia Harris named 2017 SC Junior Scholar
Eighth grader Tedejia Harris was named Carver Middle School’s South Carolina Junior Scholar for 2017.
The South Carolina Junior Scholars Program was developed by the South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) during the 1985-86 school year to identify eighth grade students with exceptional academic talent and to develop strategies for inclusion into special programs.
The program may provide summer opportunities for Tedejia in collaboration with state universities.
The Carver community is proud of this student for her accomplishments so far and know she will go far in life.

Seventh-grader Katherine Gomez Hernandez was named Carver’s spelling champion Jan. 12 after a tight battle with runner up, sixth-grader Kameryn Geter-Whiteside. Both students will go on to participate in the district spelling bee.

We are AVID
AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. The course is designed for students who need support in order to succeed in Advanced College Prep (Honors and ODYSSEY-Honors) courses, the most challenging courses the school district offers. In AVID, students learn organizational and study skills, work on critical thinking and questioning, receive academic assistance to help them succeed in their advanced courses, and participate in college-readiness activities.The Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) system works so well at Carver Middle School that AVID, a global nonprofit, selected Carver as a National Demonstration School, making it the first site in Spartanburg County. “Carver Middle School was selected as an AVID National Demonstration School because it has implemented the AVID System throughout the school and can serve as a model for new AVID sites,” said Terry Pruitt, Deputy Superintendent.

Carver Middle Using Cutting Edge Technology
Carver Middle School is using cutting-edge technology to create a model for prosthetic hands. Students in Andy Youngblood’s gateway to technology and robotics classes have been working with retired engineers to assemble 3-D printed prosthetic hands. The printing process lets users create a custom model in a software program before it is sent to a printer and built one layer at a time.
